Department of the History of Medicine and Medical Deontology

The Department of the History of Medicine and Medical Deontology is connected with the historical course and intellectual work of the Medical School of the University of Crete, as it is among the first Departments and Laboratories that were introduced with the establishment of the School during 1983.

As an essential link in the education of future physicians, it has always honored his distinct pedagogical role in introducing future health scientists to the historical development of the science they will serve, an essential element for the knowledge of modern medicine, but also to teach them moral rules and ethics in the exercise of daily medical work.

The Department had been always staffed by reputable scientists with international recognition, who had presented a rich and solid research work, a point of reference in the international literature. At the same time, it stands out for its important scientific and social work by promoting the organization of international conferences, symposia and summer schools that gather speakers and participants from all over Greece and the globe.

The collaboration with other Faculties of the University, as well as other scientific institutions in Greece, demonstrate the prominence of the interdisciplinary collaboration that characterizes the Department. Additionally, with its actions highlights all aspects of medicine practiced from ancient times to modern era on the Hellenic island of Crete.

Today at the Department of the History of Medicine and Medical Deontology operate the “Professor Georgios Androutsos Photographic Archive of the History of Medicine ” and the “Dr Ioannis Tsoukalas Library of the History of Medicine” in room 25 of the wing 4D of the Medical School of the University of Crete (4D25). The office of the Director of the Department is located in room 3 of the above mentioned wing (4D03). Director is the Assistant Professor of History of Medicine, Grigorios Tsoukalas.
